So that takes Pep’s spending on defenders at City to about £340m since he arrived in 2016. Not far off the total spent by Klopp on players across all positions (around £400m) since he arrived about a year earlier.
While Liverpool have recouped more money the other way. I put the figures on players sold by the 2 clubs since 2016/17 as about £336m for Liverpool and £263m for City.
All this made the more interesting by the fact that Pep took over a team that that had won 2 league titles in the previous 5 years, finishing second in 2 of the other campaigns. A team with Kompany, Fernandinho, De Bruyne, David Silva, Aguero and many others. A team competing at the top for years. Klopp came in to a side in decline, who had not won a league title in 25 years, who had just lost it’s talismanic captain and who’s only silverware in the previous 10 years was a league cup.
Really puts it in to perspective.
